By offering the best and broadest portfolio of engineering simulation software, Ansys helps companies solve the most complex design challenges and engineer products limited only by imagination.

The choice of materials we use has never been more important. Engineers always strive to design better solutions, and in today’s world that means considering sustainability and environmental impacts as well as product performance. Our software allows engineers and designers to make smarter decisions about the materials they use and enables them to create products that are safer, use fewer scarce resources, emit less pollution and can be more effectively recycled.

Working at Ansys, you will have the opportunity to create world changing software used by world leading companies such as NASA, SpaceX, Nvidia, Airbus, Boeing, Philips, Rolls Royce, Seagate and over a thousand universities. Our products help power the advancement of cutting-edge industries such as autonomous vehicles, sustainable transportation, advanced semiconductors, life-saving medical devices, satellite systems and the space industry.

Summary / Role Purpose

The R&D Engineer II contributes to the development of materials data products and supporting systems. In this role, the R&D Engineer II will collaborate with a team of expert professionals to understand customer requirements, accomplish development objectives and help to develop a new generation of data products. For example, developing solutions to enable users to make informed material choices during the product design to optimize performance, minimise cost or minimise the environmental impact.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Understands materials and materials simulation and performs moderately complex development activities to develop data products for materials selection, simulation and to support teaching.
  • Development of the MaterialUniverse data product: MaterialUniverse is a key data product containing a wealth of materials property data for all material classes. You will work with the team on its continuous development, ensuring that it provides up to date information and can be used for materials selection by our customers.
  • Maintenance and release of our core reference data products: Working closely with the entire team to maintain key data products containing materials data and creating final product releases for our different software platforms.
  • Working on varied data projects: In addition to the projects stated above you may be involved in projects with customers, our data partners, or other collaborators and in training sessions with users of the software as required. Work will vary, but typically involves independent research and data manipulation and analysis.
  • Works under the general supervision of a manager.

Minimum Education/Certification Requirements and Experience

  • Working experience with solving complex technical engineering/materials problems using recognized methods covering data collection, analysis and technical reporting.
  • Working experience with solving engineering problems, via simulation, preferably using Finite Elements in areas such as solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, electromagnetics and biomechanics.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

  • Technical knowledge and experience with scientific data, backed up with some form of experience with data analysis, visualization, and preferably a knowledge of relational databases.
  • Working experience of performing product life cycle assessments (LCA), investigating sustainable material solutions and writing technical reports summarizing key findings.
  • Experience of writing code to automate data analysis/manipulation processes (e.g. Python, C#, Excel VBA macros ).
  • Good communication skills in written and spoken English and good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to learn quickly and to collaborate with others in a geographically distributed team.
